There are seasons when it feels like everything has been taken. The job is gone. The marriage is over. Someone you love is changing before your eyes. You wake up and wonder, “What am I supposed to do with my life now?”
That is where Mira finds herself at the beginning of Promise Hill. She is new to town. She has lost her job. Her marriage has ended. Her mom has dementia. And she is not walking into Promise Hill with a neat faith story or a list of Bible verses she knows how to lean on.
She is tired. Lost. And honestly, she feels buried.
Maybe you have felt that way too. Not necessarily because your story looks like Mira’s, but because something you counted on is no longer there. A plan fell apart. A relationship changed. A dream did not happen the way you thought it would.
When enough loss piles up, it can feel like life is shoveling dirt on top of you. But Grandma Eden offers Mira a different thought. What if you are not buried? What if you are planted?
Buried and planted can look very similar at first
A seed beneath the soil does not look impressive. It is in the dark. It is covered. It cannot see what is happening above ground. If it could talk, it might have a few questions. “Why am I down here?” “Did anyone forget about me?” “Is this the end?”
I think many of us have had those questions in our own way. We may not say them out loud. We may keep busy. We may try to make a new plan right away. But underneath all of that, there can be a quiet fear that this hard season is all there is.
Grandma Eden’s wisdom does not make Mira’s losses disappear. Her mom still has dementia. The marriage is still over. The job is still gone. But it gives Mira a new way to look at the soil around her. Maybe this is not the end of her story. Maybe something new can grow here.

God can grow something in the places we did not choose
Loss is still loss. Grief is still grief. We do not have to pretend something devastating was actually fine.
But God has a way of bringing life out of places that feel finished. Sometimes the thing growing is not what we expected. It may be courage. A new friendship. A softer heart. A clearer understanding of what matters. A willingness to ask for help. A faith that begins as one small question instead of a giant, confident answer.
Mira is not a Christian when she comes to Promise Hill. She does not arrive ready to believe everything or understand everything. And that is part of why I love her story. She gets to be curious. She gets to ask questions. She gets to sit with people who do not force her into a quick answer.
God is not afraid of the person who feels lost. He is not waiting for someone to have the right words before He comes near.
You do not have to know what is growing yet
One of the hardest parts of being planted is that growth is often hidden for a while. You may be doing the next right thing, but still not see where it is leading. You may be showing up, praying small prayers, going to counseling, taking care of your family, or simply getting through the day.
That still counts.
Psalm 126:5 says that those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. I love that the verse does not deny the tears. It does not tell us to skip over them. It simply reminds us that tears can be part of the sowing.
You may be in a season where all you can do is water the seed. Get some rest. Tell someone the truth. Take the walk. Make the appointment. Open your Bible, even if you do not know what to read. Whisper, “God, if You are there, help me.” Small things count.
A question to carry with you
If you are in a hard season, you do not have to solve your whole life today. Maybe just ask: “What might God be growing in me here?”
You may not have an answer right away. That is okay. Sometimes the answer comes slowly, like a seed making its way through the soil. Sometimes it comes through a person who sees something in you that you cannot see yet. Sometimes it comes through a story.
Mira’s story begins in a place of deep loss, but it does not stay there. Promise Hill becomes a place where she starts noticing that she may not be as alone as she thought.

If you feel buried right now, I hope you will hold onto this: You are not forgotten in the dark. You are not beyond hope. And this is not the end of your story. You are planted.

What does it mean to be planted instead of buried?
The image is a reminder that a difficult season is not necessarily the end of your story. Like a seed beneath the soil, some growth happens quietly before we can see it.
What if I cannot see what is growing yet?
You do not have to know the whole next chapter. Rest, honest prayer, supportive people, and one small caring step can all be part of tending the season you are in.
Where should I start listening to Promise Hill?
Begin with Episode 1, The Seed. Starting at the beginning gives Mira’s story room to unfold, one small moment at a time.
